Welcome back!

It was lovely to see all the children return from the Easter holidays looking so smart and eager to start their learning.

We have a Geography based topic this term, looking at the UK. We are learning about some of the mountains, major rivers and seas in the UK as well as naming some important cities.

In maths we have been adding and subtracting fractions.  We know that the denominator stays the same and we need to add or subtract the numerators.

In English we read a poem about a train journey and have been collecting words and phrases ready to write our own poem next week.

This week we have been busy rehearsing for our upcoming production! We look forward to seeing you all next Tuesday for our performance. 

Just a reminder the children need to wear their yellow PE T-shirt  on Tuesday with their normal school uniform.

Week beginning 6.5.25

In maths this week we have been learning how to find fractions of a number.  We know that we need to divide the number by the denominator and multiply the answer by the numerator.

In our geography lessons we have been locating human and physical features on a map of England.  We also looked at the lake district in more detail and created a picture of a landscape in art.  We used watercolours to create a background of sky, mountains, fields and a lake.  Then we used our sketching skills to add detail and shading.

We also learned how rivers are formed in geography and did some online research to find out more information.  We know that rivers start at the source and flow down land towards the mouth of the river.  We know that a river has an upper, middle and lower course.  In English we will be writing an explanation text about rivers.

In science, we learned about the main food groups and the nutrients they provide us with. We know that humans need a balanced diet, exercise and good hygiene to stay healthy.

We all had a great time at the picnic on VE day.  In preparation we made hats, flags and bunting.  We learned all about why we celebrate VE day.

Week beginning 12th May

In English this week we began writing and illustrating our explanation texts about rivers.  We made sure we used the correct features such as subheadings, technical words, causal conjunctions and present tense.  We will finish them next week, edit and publish.

In maths we have been learning about money.  We can make an amount in different ways, count and add notes and coins.  Next week we will work on giving change.

In Science, we continued learning about a balanced diet.  We looked at food labels and the nutritional values of different foods.  We analysed food labels to prove or disprove given statements, such as: is food that is high in protein always high in fat?

In geography, we have been using atlases to find cities and counties in Wales.  We also learned about some key topographical features of Wales, such as Mount Snowdon, River Severn and the Brecon Beacons.

In Computing, we finished our unit on Scratch.  We created an algorithm with coding blocks to make a game.   

Next week we are looking forward to the Opal Stay and Play on Tuesday and Sports Day on Friday afternoon.

We had a special visitor in class this week when we discovered we had been visited by a Hoebble.  The first sign that something strange was occurring was when we started discovering stones stacked around the classroom.  We soon discovered this was the work of the Hoebble!  To encourage the Hoebble to return to its own environment we thought about what it might need to survive and stay healthy.  Then we set to work making a range of items that it might need, such as shelters, blankets, food, fitness equipment, zip wires, handgliders, just to name a few.  The children had great fun and hope the Hoebble made it home safely.

In Maths we have been learning about money again this week and calculating change . We also solved word problems related to money.

In English we finished writing our explanation texts about rivers and then edited then and published them.

In Science, we have been learning about the different types of skeletons: endoskeleton, exoskeleton and hydrostatic skeleton.  We sorted animals according to their type of skeleton.

On Friday, we enjoyed a fabulous Sports Day and it was wonderful to see so many parents attend and show their support!

Week beginning 2.6.25

Welcome back to the final half term of Year 3!

This week we have been busy working on time in maths. We are learning to tell the time to 5 minute intervals on an analogue clock and next week we will be learning to read the time in digital form.
In English we have been learning about scene stories. We planned our stories this week using pictures, expanded noun phrases, similes, alliteration and powerful verbs. Next week we will write our stories.

In science we have been learning about the human skeleton and can name many bones such as the femur, patella, humerus and clavicle. 
We had a fantastic Beat Box and Break Dancing workshop on Thursday. The children were taught to use their voices as instruments in order to beat box. They were also shown some break dancing moves and created a dance sequence.

Week Beginning 30th June

We have had a really busy week!

On Monday we had aspirations day and all the children dressed up and talked about what they want to be when they are older.  We had some visits from a police officer, project manager and a graphic designer.  The children were very interested and asked lots of thoughtful questions.

On Tuesday we had our school visit to Mountfitchett Castle.  Although the weather was very hot, the children had a great day exploring the castle grounds.  They loved seeing the animals and taking part in the various displays.

On Friday some children visited Lambourne End Activity Centre and those children who remained at school had a super day with  Mrs Evans taking part in many creative arts.  The children who went to Lambourne showed some great team work skills and resilience.  They were very brave and took part in all the activities.
