Autumn Term

Welcome Back!

It has been wonderful to see the children return to school and they have adapted well to the new KS2 routines.  They are settling well into their new classes and making new friends.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of parents at our Parent Meeting on Monday which will be held in Holly class at 2.50pm.  This meeting will inform you about the Year 3 Curriculum and everything you need to know as your child transitions from Year 2 to Year 3.

We will update this page every week with lots of information about the children's learning so stay tuned!

Have a great weekend!

English

In English this week we have been learning all about the power of reading!  We have been picking out interesting words and phrases from our class story 'The Abominables' and used them to describe the setting and the yetis.  We tried hard to use accurate punctuation in our sentences along with sentence starters, adjectives, similes and alliteration.

Maths

We have continued learning about place value and exploring numbers up to 1000.  We can partition numbers into hundreds, tens and ones, using base 10 equipment and jottings.

Science

This week we set up an investigation about the importance of roots in plants and how they soak up the water and nutrients from the soil.

PE

This term we are learning how to play rugby.  This week we learnt how to hold a rugby ball correctly and how to throw and catch it.

History and Art

We began our topic about Trade and Transport!  The children thought about what they already know and what they want to learn.  We made posters about trade and transport in our art lesson.

The children have new spellings to learn ready for next Friday. Please spend some time with your children reading, practising spellings and times tables.  Homework will be sent out next Thursday 18th September.

Have a wonderful weekend!

This week we had a visit from a Fire Safety Officer who told us all about the fire dangers in our home and how to stay safe.  She asked all the children to share their knowledge at home and to remind their parents to check the batteries in their smoke detectors.  Please ask your child about the visit.

In our history lessons we have been learning about the Romans.  We learnt that they were great engineers and built 3000km of roads in Britain.  We made a mosaic of a Roman road to learn about the different layers of the road which made them very hard wearing.

In our English lessons we have been learning about instructions.  We followed instructions to make a jam sandwich and know that if the instructions aren't in the correct order we will get in a muddle!  We planned a set of instructions to train a yeti, based on our class book ‘The Abominables’.  We know that instructions need: a title, an introduction, headings, bullet points and clear, numbered steps, imperative verbs and adverbs of time.  Next week we will write and edit our instructions.

In maths we have continued learning about place value and have been comparing numbers using the < = > symbols.  In Science we have been learning about the leaves of a plant and learnt about the process of photosynthesis.  In our Computing lessons we have been learning about how to keep ourselves safe online.

Have a lovely weekend everybody!

This week we have been writing a wonderful set of instructions to train a yeti, based on our class book ‘The Abominables’. Here are some examples:

In maths this week, we have been continuing learning about place value. We had lots of fun on Tuesday as we played a place value game where we had to order numbers to 1,000. We then learnt about counting in 50s. Finally, we use our knowledge of number bonds and number facts so that we can apply it to trickier questions. For example, if I know by number bonds to 10, if I make the numbers 10 times bigger, then I know my number bonds to 100!

In science, we dissected real flowers to learn more about the different parts of a flower and their functions. We carefully took the flowers apart and labelled the stigma, style, ovary, anther, filament, petals, and sepals. We learnt that all these parts work together to help the flower with pollination and reproduction. It was exciting to see how flowers are built and to explore them like real scientists!

In History and art, we have been learning about the Romans. On Monday, we bartered with each other to get the necessary equipment we needed so that on Friday we could make some wonderful chariots.

We hope you have a wonderful weekend!

In English, we have been reading Where the Wild Things Are. Through talk for writing, we have been re-telling the story ready to write our own stories next week.

Where The Wild Things Are - book, teaching resources, story, mats, card,

In maths,  adding 1s, 10s and100s to 3-digit numbers. We then moved on to subtracting 1s from 3-digit numbers. Next week we will be subtracting 10s and100s from 3-digit numbers and learning formal column addition.

In history, we have been learning about the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings. We labelled pictures of a Viking long ship and learnt about how they traded. Next week, we will be visited by a real-life Viking!

In Science, we have planted some seeds to see what will happen when seeds have enough or not enough room to grow. Additionally, we went to the wild grass area of our field, where we released balloons filled with seeds to plant them!

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

10.10.25

In English, we started writing our Voyage and Return stories based on the book 'Where the wild things are'.  The children tried hard to use description and accurate punctuation.

In maths, we have started learning how to use the column method to add. We know that we need to add the ones first, then the tens and then the hundreds.

In PE, we have continued practising our rugby skills and learning some tactics for defending and attacking.

In history, the children learned about how the Vikings were great weavers and the items they traded with other countries.  They weaved a paper basket and then filled it with items to trade such as honey, silver, fur and wool.

On Thursday we had a Viking workshop.  The children had a great time making Viking shields and listening to traditional Viking stories. They also had the opportunity to make and eat some Viking food outside in our Forest School area.

Have a great weekend everybody!

3.11.25

Welcome back from the half term holiday!  It was great to see all the children looking so smart in their uniforms.

This week we have continued learning about subtraction in maths and have been exchanging the ten for ten ones when we have needed to cross the tens boundary.

In English we have read the story of Hansel and Gretel and used Talk for Writing to retell the story. Next week we will write our own tricking the monster story.

In Science we started our new topic Rocks and Soils and completed a quiz to find out what we already knew.

On Thursday we took part in Outdoor Learning Day and had lots of lessons outside.  We used our 5 senses to explore our surroundings and completed a maths lesson outside using chalk and the playground floor to solve our subtraction calculations.

We also looked for rocks and sorted them according to different criteria such as size, colour, texture, man-made or natural.  We went on a leaf hunt, identifying different leaves and then we did some leaf rubbings with crayons.  Our final activity was to use fallen twigs and leaves to create outdoor art.

Look at the pictures below to see how much fun we had!

Have a great weekend everyone!

In English the children have read the story of Hansel and Gretel and then planned their own ‘Tricking the monster’ story.  We are looking forward to writing these next week.

In maths, we have been doing lots of column subtraction and looking at when we need to exchange and when we don't. Additionally, we started to look at going between subtraction and addition to make sure we don't get confused! Next week, we will be looking at how to use the inverse operations to check our work.

In science, we started our new topic of rocks and soils.  We have learnt that there are 3 different types of rock:  igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic.

In Geography, we have been learning about the Equator, Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn. We learnt that the area in-between these lines tends to be tropical which is a good place for cacao beans to grow.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

We have had a wonderful week in Year 3. We have been busy writing our non-chronological reports on the process of bean to bar.

Here's a video of the process if you would like to watch! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Khdz2Stp2ZQ

In maths, we have begun learning about multiplication and division. We started by looking at making groups, then looked at making arrays and finally counting on and back in multiples of 2, 3, 5, 10.

                                                               Image preview

On Wednesday, we had no pens day, which was full of fun. We did drama, making arrays and finally an exciting chocolate-filled science lesson. Using layers of biscuit and chocolate, we created sedimentary rock which covered a fossil (pasta)! In the afternoon, we became palaeontologists and dug out our fossils.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

1/12/25

We have had a busy week in Year 3.

The children showed a fantastic growth mindset during their assessments, proving themselves to be determined and resilient!  We are very proud of them.

In PE the children worked in unison to perform dance moves to the theme of Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland.

In Music, the children used glockenspiels and boomwhackers to play tunes, keeping in time with the music.

In Science, the children learnt about the palaeontologist Mary Anning and her discovery of some well-known dinosaur fossils.

In Art, the children created some wonderful Christmas trees using paper weaving.

On Friday, the children took part in the Rudolph Dash and ran around the track an impressive 8 times!

Have a great weekend!

This week we have had a busy week preparing for our Enterprise.

As part of our topic this term we have been learning about how chocolate is made.  We learnt that cacao trees grow in tropical countries close to the equator and we created non-chronological reports to explain the process of cacao bean to chocolate bar.  Therefore, we wanted our enterprise to link to chocolate!  We made chocolate Rice Krispies cakes and truffles.  We also made chocolate soil cups to consolidate our understanding of the different layers of soil in science.

Thank you for your support, we raised an amazing £195!
