Week commencing 23rd February 2026
In English, we have been learning how to write effective persuasive letters. After generating ideas and carefully planning our work, we are writing to our Headteacher to request permission to hold a bake sale. Linking with our Eurovision topic, we hope to raise money for endangered animals in Europe. In our letters, we are focusing on the key features of persuasive writing, including a clear viewpoint, strong arguments supported by reasons, emotive language, rhetorical questions, and a formal tone. We are proud of how confidently the children are expressing their opinions and supporting a cause they care about.
In Maths, we have been exploring length and perimeter in a range of practical and problem-solving contexts. We began by measuring and calculating the perimeter of rectangles before moving on to finding the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. We have also developed our reasoning skills by identifying missing lengths in rectilinear shapes and using these to calculate the total perimeter. To deepen our understanding, we have applied our knowledge to measuring and calculating the perimeter of a variety of polygons, building both accuracy and confidence in our mathematical thinking.
In Science, we have been learning to construct and interpret food chains as part of our science work. We have explored how energy flows from producers to consumers and learned key vocabulary such as predator and prey. We enjoyed creating our own food chains and explaining the relationships between living things within different habitats, developing our understanding of how animals and plants depend on one another to survive.
In Art, we have been developing our sketching and shading techniques by drawing the Eiffel Tower. We focused on observing shape, proportion and structure, carefully adding detail to create an accurate outline. We have also practised using shading to show light and shadow, helping to add depth and dimension to their artwork while building confidence in our drawing skills.
What a fun-filled week!

Week commencing 9th February 2026
This week in Maths, Year 4 explored different units of measure for length. We learned about kilometres and metres and when it is appropriate to use each unit. The children practised measuring and comparing distances using kilometres and metres. They also worked on understanding equivalent lengths, converting between kilometres and metres to show that they can represent the same distance in different ways.
This week in English, Year 4 focused on writing a persuasive leaflet. The children created leaflets encouraging people to visit Paris and explore its famous landmarks. They used persuasive language, emotive language and rhetorical questions to engage the reader. The class also worked on identifying and using subordinate clauses and complex sentences to make their writing more detailed and effective. They included a variety of sentence starters to make their leaflets interesting and engaging.
In addition, we joined a live Zoom session with My Futures, where the children took part in a fun “Guess the Job” game. They were then introduced to three different professionals who spoke about their careers, helping to broaden the children’s understanding of future job opportunities and aspirations.
This week, Year 4 designed and made traditional German pretzels. The children followed a recipe carefully, practised shaping the dough into the classic pretzel twist and learnt about the importance of measuring ingredients accurately. They enjoyed exploring German culture through food and evaluating their finished products.
Have a lovely half term!

Week commencing 26th January 2026
This week, Year 4 have been busy learning about lots of exciting subjects! In English, we explored persuasive leaflets, learning what they are, identifying their key features, and researching famous landmarks in Paris so that we can create our own persuasive leaflets next week, convincing the reader to go and visit some of those wonderful landmarks!
In Maths, we focused on multiplication and division. We practised reasoning and solving word problems and used partitioning to calculate two-digit numbers divided by one-digit numbers. We also used practical equipment, such as place value counters and whiteboards, before moving on to the formal written method.
In Science, we carried out a fascinating egg experiment using coke, tea, water and vinegar. We used eggs to represent teeth and explored how different liquids can affect them over time. We carefully observed how the eggs changed, noticing staining and damage caused by some drinks. We recorded our results and discussed what this tells us about looking after our teeth, including how brushing regularly, drinking water, and limiting sugary or acidic drinks can help prevent staining and tooth decay. We also used our findings to think about further investigations we could carry out in the future.
Our Geography learning took us to London, where we identified and recognised famous landmarks. Linking to this, in Design and Technology, we evaluated the clay sculptures we created of London landmarks, reflecting on what worked well and how we could improve our designs.
Another busy and brilliant week of learning in Year 4! 😊
Week commencing 19th January 2026
This week, in English, we created some wonderful cinquain poems based on emotions. These poems consist of 5 lined stanzas that follow the pattern; 2 syllables, 4 syllables, 6 syllables, 8 syllables and then ends with 2 syllables. Afterwards, we typed our stanzas using the computers and used colour, fonts, sizes and images to portray the emotion in our stanza.
In Maths, we have been multiplying a three-digit number by a one-digit number using the partitioning method, the expanded written method and formal written method to solidify our learning. We then explored a range of word problems to extend our mastery skills.
In Science, we explored the five main types of teeth and their important roles. We learnt how incisors cut food, canines tear, premolars crush, and molars grind, helping us to eat and digest our meals. We also discovered why taking care of our teeth is essential for keeping them strong and healthy. This learning helped develop our understanding of the human body and the importance of good oral hygiene.
In DT we used clay to make our own clay models of European landmarks! We had so much fun and used lots of skills such as moulding and cutting.

Week commencing 12th January 2026
What a great week we have had!
This week, in English, we completed our buddy stories based on the story, The Tunnel by Anthony Browne. We have used our toolkit to help us stick to our story line of our characters not getting along, one going into a mysterious exit/entrance and getting stuck in a European country! Followed by the other character following and rescuing them, ending with their relationship being strengthened. We focused on using inverted commas for speech to include dialogue in our stories, show not tell, fronted adverbials and synonyms for said. We have produced fantastic stories!
Within maths, we have been learning how to multiply a 2 digit number by a 1 digit number. We have been using the expanded written method whereby we multiply the number by the ones, then the tens and add them together to get the product. And the formal written method is where we multiply the ones by the number and then the tens to get the answer. Next week, we will be progressing to multiplying a 3 digit number by a 1 digit number.
In Science, we have been learning about the digestive system. Today, we acted out how food travels through our bodies using tights to pretend they were the small intestines! We used a digestive biscuit and a banana as food, orange juice and water as digestive juices, and a sandwich bag as the stomach. We churned the food in the stomach, then squeezed and pushed the food through the tights to see how it gets broken down and moves through the body. We then used paper towels to act as the large intestines, absorbing water. Finally, we cut the bottom of the tights and squeezed the contents out to complete the final stage of the digestive system. It was messy but fun!
In DT we have designed our own clay models of a European landmark. Next week we will make them.

WB 5.1.26
In maths, we have been recapping, multiplying by 10 and 100 using a place value grid. We then progressed to dividing by 10 and 100 using a place value grid.

In English, we planned a Buddy Story, based on the book 'The Tunnel' by Anthony Browne.

In art this week we used art to convey feelings, expression or movement. We did this by striking a pose to represent an emotion and tracing it. Afterwards, we used colours to express the emotions we had chosen.
