Hello Year 6! 

Here are some tasks that we would love you to complete while the school remains closed. Have a go, try your best, and most importantly, enjoy your learning!

1. Maths: Roman Numerals revision - can you recall the Roman Numerals that you know?

Challenge yourself to improve your score and see if you can climb to the top of the leaderboard! 🏆

3. Enjoy a Good Read!! 📖☀️ 

There’s always time to enjoy a good book!

Find a comfy spot, head outside into the sunshine if you can, and enjoy getting lost in a great story. 🌞📚

✅ Ask an adult to sign your reading record after you have read. 

⭐ Finished your book? Become a book reviewer! 

Tell us: 

• What was your favourite part of the story? 

• Who was your favourite character and why? 

• Would you recommend this book to a friend? 

You could even draw a picture of your favourite scene! 

4. English – Creative Writing! ✏️📖
Your task: 
Look outside your window or, if you can, go for a short walk. Take your time to notice what is around you.

1. Look closely 👀
Notice:

* What can you see?
* What colours, shapes and textures do you notice?
* Is anything moving?
* What is the weather like?

2. Listen carefully 👂
What sounds can you hear? Try to describe them using interesting vocabulary.

3. Imagine 💭
Choose one thing you noticed and imagine it has a secret story.

4. Write ✏️
Write a creative piece of at least 250 words. You could write:

* a short story
* a setting description
* a poem
* a diary entry from the point of view of something you saw

⭐ Challenge yourself!

Use:

* expanded noun phrases
* powerful verbs and adjectives
* similes and metaphors
* personification
* show, don’t tell
* a variety of sentence openers

Starter idea:
“I had never noticed it before. Hidden between the…”

Remember: You don’t need to go outside if you can’t. You can use your imagination and observe from a window instead!

Week of 21.09.2026

Well, what a week it's been so far: school closure due to the burst water main at Langston Road!

All the same, we have managed to work on negative numbers in Maths...

negative numbers are used in everyday life. For example, when the temperature drops below 0°C, we use negative numbers to show how cold it is. If the temperature is -5°C, it means it is 5 degrees below zero.

Negative numbers are also used in money. If you spend more money than you have in your bank account, your balance can become negative. For example, a balance of -£10 means you owe £10.

You can also find negative numbers when talking about height below sea level. Some places on Earth are below sea level, so their height is shown using negative numbers.

Negative numbers help us describe amounts that are below zero in real life.

In English, our comprehension was based on Theseus and the Minotaur - the children really enjoyed this Greek myth and answered the questions effectively with their VIPERS skills.

Week of 14.09.2026

It has been another busy and productive week in Year 6!

In Maths, we have been learning about rounding numbers, developing our understanding of how to round to different place values. The children have been working hard to apply their knowledge and explain their reasoning.

In History, we have continued our learning about Ancient Greece and explored the Battle of Marathon. We have learned about what happened during the battle and considered why it was such an important event in Ancient Greek history.

In English, we have been focusing on word classes, identifying and using nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. The children have been developing their understanding of how these different word classes work together to make our writing more interesting and effective.

In PE, we have continued developing our skills in tag rugby, working on passing, movement, teamwork and finding space.

Well done to everyone for another fantastic week of learning and hard work!

Week of 7.09.2026

What a busy first full week we have had although many of us started with a trip to Legoland! We had a blast, such fun and we all (adults included) challenged ourselves and faced some fears!

It's been straight down to work! In Maths, we have concentrated on place value: reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers to 10,000,000. We look forward to rounding numbers next week. All of this has been building on the Maths that we have learned in previous years and the numbers have become bigger in Year 6. We are looking forward to negative numbers and Roman numerals next week.

History has been the name of the game this week, looking at punishments from Roman times through to The Anglo-Saxons, TheTudors and The Victorians. What a crazy time it was, particularly bad if you were a woman and poor!! We will start to look at The Battle of Marathon next week, a very famous battle because of the legacies we still have: outflanking as a military strategy and the 26 mile marathon race.

 Week of 1.09.2025

Following on from our Transition Day, we completed some lovely art that will be our first Year 6 displays - watch out for those next week.

We have also talked about our new topic: Conflict, Crime and Punishment and the children have generated lots of questions which will fuel our curiosity as we work through the term. We also have a Connections Display with all of these questions and we will build connections in our learning, as we go.

We have all come back to school with a positive mindset, ready to unlock new learning, keep practising and not giving up.
