Geography

At Thomas Willingale School, our Geography curriculum inspires children to be curious about the world around them and their place within it. Following the Chris Quigley Essentials Curriculum, geography is carefully planned to build knowledge, skills and understanding progressively as children move through the school. Pupils revisit and build upon key geographical concepts, helping them to develop a deep and lasting understanding of the world.

We encourage our children to become confident and enthusiastic geographers, developing a sense of wonder about the planet and the people who live on it. Through enquiry-based learning, pupils ask questions, investigate locations and environments, analyse evidence and draw conclusions about the world around them. They learn to think critically and develop the skills needed to understand both local and global issues.

Children explore a wide range of topics, including weather and climate, continents and oceans, settlements, natural disasters, landmarks, environmental issues and the diverse ways people live around the globe. Through engaging lessons, practical activities and meaningful discussions, pupils learn to think like geographers by making connections between places, people and environments.

Our geography curriculum develops essential geographical skills, including map reading, fieldwork, observation, data collection and interpretation. Children learn how to use atlases, maps, aerial photographs and digital technologies to investigate and understand different environments and locations.

A key part of geography at Thomas Willingale School is the opportunity to take learning beyond the classroom through fieldwork and educational visits. Pupils explore their local area, conduct geographical enquiries and gather first-hand evidence to answer questions about the world around them. Through local walks, outdoor learning opportunities and curriculum-linked visits, children apply their geographical knowledge in real-life contexts, developing confidence, independence and a stronger understanding of their environment.

We aim to nurture curious, informed and responsible global citizens who appreciate the diversity of our world and understand the importance of caring for the environment. By encouraging children to explore, question and investigate as geographers, we prepare them with the knowledge and skills they need to make sense of an ever-changing world.
